Disposable Bodies:

Silvana Cardell’s Disposable Bodies: An Immersive Dance Experience at the Wilma Theater, Oct 6-8

At The Wilma Theater, From October 6 to 8, 2023, the Bryn Mawr College Performing Arts Series and Dance Department will present “Disposable Bodies,” a multi-disciplinary dance installation that delves deep into the essence of humanity, directed and choreographed by the visionary Silvana Cardell, with the creative support of dramaturge Blanka Zizka.  This NEA-awarded production continues to make waves in the world of contemporary dance.

Silvana Cardell and Blanka Zizka’s collaboration is nothing short of legendary. Their history together includes remarkable works such as “There,” “Adapt,” “Romeo and Juliette,” and “Kill Move Paradise.” In “Disposable Bodies,” this creative partnership continues to flourish, with Blanka Zizka taking on the role of dramaturge, offering her expertise to Silvana Cardell’s visionary choreography.

“Disposable Bodies” is not just a performance; it’s an exploration of the very essence of humanity and our place in the natural world. This major multi-disciplinary dance work unfolds through layers of sound, movement, and striking imagery. Comprising episodic installations, the performance leads us on a journey of shared vulnerability and the interconnectedness of all species. Silvana Cardell’s choreography goes beyond the surface, peeling back the layers of skin, bones, and muscles to challenge and reimagine the hierarchical order of human and non-human bodies.

The performance is a rollercoaster of emotions, ranging from moments of violence to tranquility, harmony to chaos. The precision and power of the interlocking movements are complemented by expansive projections and evocative installations. These include elements like grass, a giant pig, a wall of water, and a reflective floor that transitions from meditative openness to caged silence. “Disposable Bodies” invites audiences to question long-held beliefs about human identity and the classification of lives as protected or abandoned.

One of the central themes of “Disposable Bodies” is our connection to the natural world and “the other” – those often overlooked and marginalized. By bringing together human and animal bodies in new relationships, the performance challenges societal norms and invites viewers to reconsider their relationship with the environment. It is a powerful call to connect with the nobodies, the most vulnerable, and the forgotten.

Behind the scenes, a talented cast and creative team work tirelessly to bring “Disposable Bodies” to life. Dancers Merián Soto, William Robinson, Mackenzie Morris, Muyu Yuan Ruba, Tyler Rivera, and Ty Crux Jones-Blain take the stage, while Maria Chavez handles sound design, Daniel Cardell creates large-scale sculptures, Paula Meninato designs prop sculptures, Collin Sass oversees video projections and lighting design, and Pat Adams manages the stage.

“Disposable Bodies” is a work of art intended for mature audiences. It features nudity, references to violence against humanity and animals, and intensive physical contact between performers. These elements are integral to the artistic experience, prompting deep reflection and conversation.

For those attending the 7:00pm performance on Saturday, October 7th, there’s an exceptional opportunity to gain deeper insights into the performance. A Q&A session with the performers and director will provide a unique perspective on the creation and execution of “Disposable Bodies.”
