Brian Sanders’ JUNK Celebrates 25 Years with Grand Finale Fringe Show – PROTOTYPE, Sept 20-24

After an exhilarating quarter-century of pushing artistic boundaries, Brian Sanders’ JUNK is set to bid farewell to the Philadelphia Fringe Festival with an electrifying swan song that promises to be as groundbreaking as their storied journey. The renowned dance company is gearing up to present their final Fringe Festival production, “PROTOTYPE,” a mega remount and expansion of one of their earlier works that promises to be a fitting crescendo to their legacy.

Brian Sanders, the creative genius behind JUNK, expressed his excitement for this farewell performance. “I have been working in my happy place, a giant factory, on a new project,” he shared. “The working of this new spectacle will likely continue for more than a few lambs tail shakes. I certainly didn’t want my 25th Fringe Festival to go by without participating.”

Sanders’ journey with the Fringe Festival started in 1998, collaborating with Eric Schoefer in a performance that left an indelible mark. Looking back at the thrilling 25 years of adventure and creativity, Sanders is ready to embrace new horizons while celebrating the legacy that JUNK has built. “With this new project in the works, as well as a strong desire to try new things in the future, I have decided to make this JUNK’s last Fringe Festival show,” he said. “I am planning on making it everything that JUNK’s Fringe fans expect and anticipate. So, hang on to your seats!”

“PROTOTYPE” is, as the name suggests, an exclusive preview of the upcoming grand spectacle that Sanders has been meticulously crafting. The show is a transformative remount and expansion of a piece originally set in an abandoned underground swimming pool. While the essence of the original production remains intact, this update promises to be monumental in scale and impact.

JUNK’s farewell performance promises to be an unapologetic, raw, and immersive experience. “Prototype will be raw and no-holds-barred,” Sanders exclaimed. The venue itself adds to the charm, with a true-to-the-Fringe atmosphere, where beauty, grace, and high-flying grit coalesce into a stunning sensory delight.

The description of “PROTOTYPE” paints a captivating picture: set in the near-distant future, the performance revolves around two scavengers who stumble upon a darkened abyss. The intriguing question arises: is the perilous descent worth it? And why does the upper crust show any interest in this chasm of despair? Through this narrative, four high-flying aerial dance artists will navigate the remnants of our past, inviting the audience to dive deep into the near-distant past.

The show’s runtime of 70 minutes, with no intermission, promises to keep the audience enthralled throughout, creating an unbroken connection between the performers and the spectators. With ticket prices ranging from $35 to $45, “PROTOTYPE” ensures accessibility for a wide range of audiences.

The venue for this grand farewell, The Ball Bearing Factory at 4324 Tackawanna Street, Philadelphia, PA 19124, adds an industrial touch to the performance, paying homage to JUNK’s roots. The location boasts street parking and wheelchair accessibility, ensuring that everyone can partake in this poignant finale.

Mark your calendars for the highly anticipated show dates and times:

  • September 20, 21, 24 at 7:00 PM ($35)
  • September 22, 23 at 8:00 PM ($45)
