Performance Garage Initiates Phase One of a $2Million Capital Project

Phase One of the Performance Garage’s Capital Project will commence this summer, which will expand programmatic capacity. The Performance Garage is grateful to the City of Philadelphia for the support of $500,000 in capital improvement funds.

Philadelphia, PA (2/4/2016), – The Performance Garage is pleased to announce Phase One of its Capital Project will commence Summer of 2016.  The Performance Garage is grateful to the City of Philadelphia for the $500,000 in support of this project acquired through the Cultural and Commercial Corridors Bond Program.  These funds are intended as matching support for the Performance Garage’s application to the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) and will be used exclusively for associated capital improvement costs.

The Performance Garage Capital Project will transform the existing building located on 1515 Brandywine Street.  Phase One of the project will include updates and repairs to the dance studios, professional theater space, dressing room, lobby area, and administrative offices.  The Performance Garage will install a much-needed HVAC system throughout the building, which will help increase programming during summer months and through the Fringe Festival.  Additional capital improvements will include maintenance repairs and energy-efficiencies.  Bill Connor of Avision Young will conduct the project management services for Phase One.

The Performance Garage is raising additional funds for the Capital Project.  Once Phase One is complete, Phase Two renovations will include transforming the two undeveloped floors of the building into mission supportive rental properties.  These commercial rental properties will generate earned revenue for the Performance Garage, diversifying its income to include a long-term sustainable source. The Capital Project will contribute to the revitalization of the Spring Garden Neighborhood of Philadelphia, and increase the Performance Garage’s capacity to expand its supportive services and programs.

Performance Garage Executive Director Jeanne Ruddy explains,

“By having a home for dance that helps subsidize the rental cost for dance companies, choreographers, and educators, Philadelphia has a non-university affiliated dance center with improved general conditions for dance artists and for the audiences who come to see their work. The Performance Garage’s community is deeply appreciative of the support it has received from the City of Philadelphia.”

Through its subsidized rental program, the Performance Garage provides affordable rates for dance artists to host classes, workshops, auditions, and productions.  The Performance Garage Youth Outreach Program supports free, bi-weekly dance classes for neighborhood youth.  During the past year alone, the Performance Garage supported 73 performances with 897 participating artists and over 6,000 audience members.

About the Cultural and Commercial Corridors Bond Program
The Cultural and Commercial Corridors Bond Program was created to assist cultural institutions and organizations citywide with funding of capital improvement projects.  The program’s goal is to increase the visibility and accessibility of the City’s major cultural corridors, preserve and strengthen the City’s arts and culture organizations, and leverage private and public funds to support these efforts.
