Dance Company Yu.S.Artistry Presents Memories of the Moon, July 8

Yu.S.Artistry, a renowned dance company founded by Japanese native dancer and choreographer Yuki Ishiguro, is thrilled to announce the debut of their latest evening-length production, “Memories of the Moon.” The performances will take place on Saturday, July 8, at 4:30pm and 7:00pm at Villa Joseph Marie High School in Southampton, PA.

Yu.S.Artistry has gained recognition for their outstanding choreographic works, which have been showcased at numerous adjudicated dance festivals and esteemed venues across the country. Notable appearances include Actors And Arts in 2019, Queens Theater in 2021, Booking Dance Festival at Lincoln Center, WHITE WAVE’s Solo/Duo Festival, DUMBO Dance Festival, Come Together Dance Festival at Suzanne Roberts Theater in Philadelphia, and CDCfest at Orlando Rep Theater, among others.

“Memories of the Moon” is a deeply inspired dance piece based on the diary of a prisoner held in a Japanese internment camp during World War II. The protagonist, confined to a room devoid of clocks, meticulously documented the passage of time by counting the full moons. This poignant narrative serves as the foundation for Yuki Ishiguro’s newest creation, made possible through the generous financial support of the PLUNGE Grant 2023, established by esteemed New York dancers Kristalyn Gil and Grace Whitworth. Gibney Dance also contributed to the development of the piece by providing subsidized rehearsal space.

In addition to “Memories of the Moon,” the production will showcase a world premiere piece choreographed exclusively for Yu.S.Artistry by the highly acclaimed contemporary choreographer Yoshito Sakuraba. Yoshito, the founding artistic director of Abarukas, has garnered widespread recognition for his award-winning choreography, which has been presented in Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain, Israel, Mexico, and across the United States. His exceptional work has graced renowned venues such as Joyce Theater, BAM, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Jacob’s Pillow, Kaatsbaan, and McCallum Theater (Palm Desert Choreography Festival). Notable accolades include the Best Choreography Award at the FINI Dance Festival in Italy and the Audience Award at the Masdanza International Contemporary Dance Festival in Spain, among others.

Additionally, Yu.S.Artistry’s Pennsylvania company will present a captivating performance. Comprising former students of Yuki Ishiguro, who have pursued dance as a major or minor and returned to their hometown seeking performance opportunities, this talented ensemble showcases the vision of Yuki’s dream to establish the first professional dance company in the Bucks County area. The group comprises a fusion of Philadelphia-based professional dancers and former students, including Hannah Kieserman, Kelsey Kushnir, Jackson Manning, and Sarah Warren.

Joining Yuki Ishiguro and Yoshito Sakuraba, the production’s creative team includes Olivia Wood as choreographer assistant and dancer, and music composer Rin Nagaya, who adds an exquisite auditory backdrop to the performances.

The inaugural performance of “Memories of the Moon” will be a night to remember, made possible by the collaborative efforts of Institute of Dance Artistry and Coalesce Center of Dance Artistry, who will grace the stage as the opening act.
