The 11th Philadelphia Tango Festival

The 11th Philadelphia Tango Festival Celebrates Improvisation, and Launch of a New Tango Album and Record Label, May 26-29

The Philadelphia Argentine Tango School (PATS) is proud to present the 11th Philadelphia Tango Festival over Memorial Day Weekend, from May 26-29, 2023, with an early arrival event on May 25. This year’s festival will feature the theme of Improvisation in Tango Dance and Music, and will inaugurate a new yearly tradition of producing an original album of tango music each year.

The festival promises to have something for everyone, with classes and workshops for beginner and experienced tango dancers, nightly social dances with live and recorded tango music, seated concerts, dance performances, lectures, dance prácticas (practice sessions), a masterclass for tango singers, and even yoga and classes in Argentine folkloric dancing.

Renowned couples from Buenos Aires, Octavio Fernandez and Corina Herrera, and Cecilia Garcia and Serkan Gokcesu, will teach themed classes and workshops for in-depth instruction. Beginners will be in great hands with instructors Martin Enos and Dagny Miller, while instructor Nick Wallach will teach workshops in the folkloric dances zamba and chacarera.

The festival features live music every night, with seated concerts and social dance music during milongas (tango dance parties). An exciting array of outstanding tango musicians includes the Típica Messiez Tango Orchestra, Juan Villarreal & Patricio Crom, Romo-Agri-Messiez Trio, Hugo Satorre & Leandro Roucco, and combinations of the above. Recorded music at the milongas and prácticas is provided by popular local and international DJs.

The Philadelphia Tango Festival launches a new tradition this year – each year the festival will produce a new album of highly danceable tango music for social dancers, featuring at least fifty percent new compositions. The albums will be released on an all-new record label, TSP Records (Tango Sounds from Philly). The first album produced by the festival is “Psicoporteño,” by the Típica Messiez Tango Orchestra, which will be presented on Saturday, May 27 as part of the milonga (tango social dance) event.

All activities from May 26-29 take place at the Lithuanian Music Hall, 2715 E. Allegheny Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19134, with the exception of one late night event, which takes place at the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School, 2030 Frankford Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19125.

For local and early arrivals, PATS will host a special screening of the new documentary “El Sonido de Antes / The Hidden Sound of Tango,” by Yael Szmulewicz, at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute. The screening event includes a discussion with the filmmaker Yael Smulewicz and the film’s protagonist, Patricio Crom, as well as a short concert of tango music by Patricio Crom & Juan Villarreal. The early arrival event takes place at Bryn Mawr Film Institute (BMFI), 824 Lancaster Ave, Bryn Mawr, PA 19010, and is ticketed through BMFI as well.

Meredith Klein, PATS founder and director, says, “The festival truly has something for everyone this year. We are thrilled to offer such an amazing variety of activities, with the finest workshops, concerts, performances, and more. We invite everyone to come and celebrate improvisation in tango dance and music with us.”
