Adam Kerbel’s Motion Sickness, Dec 16-18

MOTION SICKNESS adds a unique brand of improvisation to Miniball Festival at Christ Church Neighborhood House in Old City. Miniball is a micro-version of Cannonball Festival, featuring encore performances plus new works to keep the spirit of Cannonball sailing all year.

MOTION SICKNESS builds on inspiration from The Protest Banner Lending Library by Chicago-based artist Aram Han Sifuentes, and the popular song title by singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers to emphasize connection through sensory experience. Repurposed as a dance performance, improviser Adam Kerbel strings together encounters with the audience to expand conceptions about improvisation as a legitimate force in daily life, writing, and community.

An event made moment by moment but without any words or “steps,” MOTION SICKNESS is an exploration of communication and solution making.

Originally conceived for the Visions Series at Cannonball Festival 2022, this breakthrough performance earned an invitation from Cannonball producers to foster its development between Philadelphia and St. Louis, Missouri where Kerbel is based.

Adam Kerbel (he/him/el) is a choreographer and educator interested in the politics of bodies. He collides improvisation with real interactions and performance situations to challenge deeply held perceptions about communication and understanding. Based in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, Adam is co-founder of the pioneering Almanac Dance Circus Theatre in Philadelphia and was a puppeteer and storyteller at Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Growing up in diverse northern Los Angeles County, CA the movements of motorcycles and horses across the sensitive desert areas spurred his initial interest in movement.

Presentations of Kerbel’s works include Cannonball Festival (Phila), New York Live Arts (NY), Skirball Center for the Performing Arts (NY), Skirball Cultural Center (LA), Philadelphia Museum of Art (Phila), High Voltage (LA), Home Grown (LA), Painted Bride (Phila), Links Hall (Chicago), Festival Internacional de Danza (Mexico City) and Breaking Walls Festival (Cairo, Egypt).
