From an enchanted winter forest to the glowing Northern Lights, take a magical journey through a world of dance in A Winter’s Dream, a ballet created and choreographed by Christina Castro-Tauser for International Ballet Exchange (IBE). On Saturday, December 10, IBE will present two shows at Teatro Esperanza, 4261 N. 5th Street, Philadelphia, at 1 pm and 7 pm.
The ballet features a cast of youth ages 5 to 18 from the Germantown-based IBE’s sister studio, Wissahickon Dance Academy. Also represented are other local studios, community dancers, and young local ballet professionals. Featured are professionals who perform traditional dance from different cultures, including Modero (Indonesian dance), Ballet Folklorico Mexico Lindo, and the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School.
The ballet opens with a party and takes the audience around the world to the glowing Northern Lights. “We are delighted to be returning the ballet to the stage and to the beautiful Teatro Esperanza, which is a great space to dance in and to watch dance,” said Castro-Tauser, who created the ballet over the summer and fall of 2021, premiering it at Teatro Esperanza that December. “Last year, we had no idea if we would be able to perform for a live audience when the time came, so I made a ballet that can be adapted for various venues and audiences and grow with time.”
For example, after the premiere, Castro-Tauser took a shortened version of the ballet to Frances Willard Elementary School, where IBE is in residence with a program of weekly ballet classes. The show marked the school’s return to assemblies. “It was such an exciting day,” said Castro-Tauser. “The Willard students we integrated into the ballet, dancing with the professionals and youth artists. And the school opened the shows, so their families and peers could see them perform. The performances also sparked interest in our program, and this year we have more than 50 Willard students taking IBE’s ballet classes.” IBE also made a recording of the entire ballet available free to local educators.
Castro-Tauser brings to the project extensive experience with classical ballet, including her training with Minnesota Dance Theater, Milwaukee Ballet, and, in Cuba, with Laura Alonso. Her contemporary choreography, which she started while an apprentice at Colorado ballet, was further honed through Temple University’s MFA program in dance, which she completed in 2018.
