Coven premieres Sept 5-10

Premiering as part of the Philadelphia Fringe and Cannonball Festivals and developed by artistic director Courtney Colón, Coven is a loud declaration responding to the blatantly oppressive assault on abortion rights across America.

Navigating the belief systems surrounding the loss of bodily autonomy and the stripping of women’s rights, Coven is an immersive performance mimicking exhibitions within an art gallery. We welcome the audience to become more than a spectator and move throughout the performance space.

As dancers explore improvisation within the work and navigate the additional bodies of our visitors, the audience will have an interactive relationship with both the performers and pieces of the installation itself. Coven will be further framed using original sound, projection, and the writings of the artists, as we invite audience members to become part of a ritual led by witches of the resistance invoking powerful women from the past and looking ahead to a feminist utopia of our own making.

Courtney Colón is an artist-activist working as a creator, educator, mover, and writer. Courtney’s work is socially-engaged, multidisciplinary, and feminist, centered on the politics of women’s bodies. She holds an MFA in Dance from Hollins University. Her choreography and lectures have been presented across the United States, as well as internationally. She has taught and performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Courtney is also a freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Philadelphia Dance Journal, DIY Dancer Magazine, and Snapdragon Journal, amongst others. She is driven by innovation, disruption, and cultivating engagement between all communities.
