Me and Jesus and Prince and Captain Jean-Luc Picard in a One Bedroom apartment in the Bronx is a solo performance from choreographer, dancer, and facilitator Shavon Norris, September 21, 23, and 25 in the Cannonball Festival within the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, at the Mass Building Studios (1320 N 5th Street, Philadelphia). The piece uses movement and theater to explore the sounds, words, doctrines, people(s), places, and objects that influenced the performer’s developing mind, body, and spirit. It is a love letter and a challenge to the biological, cultural, and historical artifacts and fossils in her blood and in her vision. The piece is part of the BIPOC New Work Festival Presentation Track at Cannonball Festival, created to offer opportunities to individual BIPOC artists, collectives and small companies to present full-length performance works during the festival.
Creator and performer, Shavon Norris has shared, “This piece invites me to be curious about the things that happen to us. Around us. And within us. Curious about what tools we use to gain access to the things we tend to keep quiet or hidden or unseen or secret. How do we engage with these things and invite them into our individual and communal pleasure, rage, and healing? I am so pleased I get to explore these questions and this piece with Philadelphia through the Cannonball Festival within the Fringe Festival.”
Me and Jesus and Prince and Captain Jean-Luc Picard in a One Bedroom apartment in the Bronx, is an autobiographical piece written, choreographed, and performed by Shavon Norris with direction support from Alex Torra. It examines the nuanced and expansive ways our people, places and things impact our perspective, language, and actions toward self, others and the living and non-living world. Shavon invites herself and the audience to consider – What has made you? What desires and or needs to be celebrated? What desires and or needs to be adjusted? Adapted? Transformed?
