SHARP Dance Company is thrilled to open the doors of Equilibrium Dance Academy, where they are the artist-in-residence, for their spring performance of “HAVEN.” The concert will feature choreography by Artistic Director Diane Sharp-Nachsin, Joe Cotler, formerly of Koresh Dance Company; Kevin Ferguson, formerly of Parsons & Doug Elkins Dance; and Miguel Quiñones, once a dancer with Parsons Dance. This intimate performance showcases the best of SHARP and an excerpt of SHARP’s newest work in progress, “Stories.”
“We decided to move our spring performance to a more informal in-studio series performance to engage the local South Philadelphia community,” said Artistic Director Diane Sharp-Nachsin. “SHARP was recently named Artist-in-Residence at Equilibrium Dance Academy. We want our South Philadelphia neighbors to know that we are now working in this space, that classes are available, and they can even see a performance in their neighborhood.”
Some of SHARP’s audience favorites to be presented include The Journey, a solo about waking up in bed alone and dealing with the feelings that follow the loneliness. Another favorite is Seven Windows which utilizes collaborations with notable visual artists from around the world. Based on a dancer’s dream in which her recently departed mother visits her, Seven Windows looks into the world of reincarnation and moving on in the afterlife. With new choreography by Diane Sharp-Nachsin and inspired by original paintings made by: Jill Brandwein (Italy), Danielle Hallman (Philadelphia), Patricia Zarate (NYC), and Julia Salinger (Massachusetts), Seven Windows asks the questions, “How do we know it’s time to move on?”
An excerpt of SHARP’s newest work in progress, Stories, touches on the relationships we form in our lives and how these connections can force us to carry some baggage as we move forward. Stories addresses the lonely time we have been through in the last few years and how it affects the relationships we will be building in the future.
The cast includes dancers Juliet Bernstein, Linnea Calzada-Charma, Wren Coleman, Sandra Davis, Kate Lombardi, Miguel Quiñones, and Rosemary Scalise.
SHARP Dance Company blends classic dance techniques with intriguing stories that speak to the human experience and is relatable to all audiences.
SHARP has toured nationally and internationally for the past 13 years, performing in over 30 cities in the United States, including New York, Rochester, Phoenix, Chicago, Cincinnati, Portland, San Diego, Brooklyn, Boulder, and Portsmouth. The company was selected as one of 11 artists worldwide to the BAU Institute in Italy for a two-week artist residency as well as for a residency in Paros, Greece, which inspired their original work “The Garden Tour .” SHARP performed in England as part of the BedFringe.
