Usiloquy Dance Designs presents A Celebration of Diwali, Nov 6

Usiloquy Dance Designs invites you to a joyous celebration of Diwali, the Festival of Lights, and to celebrate the vast South Asian diaspora who observe the festival, along with their culture and dance.

The goal of the event is, “to create a welcoming space for the South Asian diaspora that celebrates Diwali, and gather communities of Asian and non-Asian descent to promote cross-cultural harmony in a progressive ambiance,” said Shaily Dadiala, the Artistic Director of Usiloquy Dance Designs and organizer of the event.

Based on the techniques of 2000-year-old South Indian classical dance Bharatanatyam, the featured performance, crafted by Usiloquy Dance, focuses on the celebration of Diwali with two live 45-minute dance presentations followed by a short conversation with the artists.

Other featured artists and exhibitions include a Rangoli artist, who will also host a talk-back, and a live sitar player. Cherry Street Pier will host the event, turning the industrial space into a bright, colorful, and exciting celebration for the entire Philadelphia community.

This is a pay-what-you-decide event open for all ages. Tickets are suggested but not required.
Masks are mandatory, regardless of vaccination status, and social distancing guidelines will be in place.

This project is supported in part by the Philadelphia Office of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy and Cherry Street Pier.

Usiloquy Dance Designs was founded in 2008 by Artistic Director Shaily Dadiala to supplement the Greater Philadelphia area’s need for an Indian Classical dance platform. Usiloquy Dance Designs is the only contemporary Bharatanatyam organization of its kind in the region, creating unique works that cross-cultural boundaries and builds bridges between diverse audience communities. Usiloquy works to create a conduit between the age-old dance form that originated in the temples of Southern India to schools and concert halls serving over 15,000 audience members to date.
