The Dance Journal: Myzrie House

9th Reflection:Response Choreographic Commission to feature Myzrie House, by movement artists Mark Wong and Nicole Burgio, Oct 15 & 16

The Temple University Department of Dance, Institute for Dance Scholarship, is delighted to present the ninth Reflection:Response Choreographic Commission, Myzrie House, by movement artists Mark Wong and Nicole Burgio.

Two people are thrust into a mysterious cell together for reasons unknown. Are they the last humans left on Earth? Can they escape? Are they meant to become friends, more than friends, or perhaps enemies? And what’s the deal with the ominous doomsday clock which keeps appearing? Mark Wong and Nicole Burgio invite you to a room of dance, theater, merrymaking, and action. Welcome to Myzrie House.

Performed by Mark Wong and Nicole Burgio
Directed by Annie Wilson
Production Managed by Kate Hanley

Nicole Burgio and Mark Wong are professional movement artists living together in West Philly. Nicole is accomplished in acrobatics, circus arts, and physical theater; her solo performance xoxo moongirl (with Almanac Dance Circus Theater) toured nationally and abroad. She currently works as an acrobatics/circus coach and performer. Mark is passionate about Breaking and strives to use it as an artistic and educational tool for youth with his company, Hip Hop Fundamentals. Together, they fervently pursue empowering others through the arts. This is their first full-length duet and their fifth year of marriage.

The Reflection/Response Commission acknowledges the centrality of individual artistic contributions to the field, providing commissioning funds, rehearsal space, production support and community engagement opportunities for choreographers invested in choreographic and movement research. The Commission includes a cash award of $5,000 and access to rehearsal space at Temple University throughout summer. Past commission recipients include Awilda Sterling, Laura Peterson, Charles O. Anderson, Tatyana Tennenbaum, Jennifer Weber, Kathy Westwater, and Lela Aisha Jones.

The Reflection/Response Commission is a program of Temple University Department of Dance’s Institute for Dance Scholarship. The Institute aims to foster and enrich dance research for the students and faculty of Temple University through engagement with scholars, artists and dance professionals working in the field. Through a range of public events, guest seminars and collaborative research projects, it engenders a critical network for dance studies. The Institute’s programs also include the Dance Studies Colloquium and a Scholar-In-Residence Program.
