Dream Chapters will take place in Mt. Airy, Philadelphia, with six performances from April 30th through May 2nd (6:30 PM and 8 PM shows on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). Dream Chapters is a new dance-theater work co-conceived and produced by Evalina “Wally” Carbonell and Weiwei Ma. This intimate live performance features five solo works created and performed by dance artists Evalina Carbonell, Joshua Culbreath, Weiwei Ma, Ariel Isakowitz, and Shayla-Vie Jenkins. Actress and writer Tatyana Yassuckovich, will weave an original poetic performance alongside and throughout each distinct chapter. Dream Chapters is a personal and collective return to the immersive magic of storytelling, articulated by an incredible cast of Philadelphia artists. Journey with us to the space of dreams, to the tangible and murky constellations of a storied becoming.
Actress and writer Tatyana inhabits the space as one suspended between the worlds of audience and dancers in her own experiential bubble, performing her own words, seeing through the eyes of both dreamer and observer. She creates the verbal landscape that deepens and illuminates the connections between her and the dancers, who all hail from distinct movement backgrounds. While dancers Weiwei, Evalina, and Ariel often dance together under the umbrella of Philly-based Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers (KYL/D), their dancing roots are quite varied. While Weiwei received her early training in Contemporary and Classical Chinese Dance at the Beijing Academy of Dance, Evalina started her career in Classical Ballet and was drawn to Contemporary Dance through the lens of the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®. Ariel inhabits his own movement blend, which draws from Jazz, Gaga, and Modern Dance. Currently, on faculty at the University of the Arts, Shayla-Vie Jenkins is a modern dancer and maker whose style is informed both by her own personal voice and her many years with Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company. Named one of Dance Magazine’s 25 artists to watch, breakdancer and creator, Joshua Culbreath brings high-level physicality and expression.
Dream Chapters comes to life in a turn-of-the-century garage, recently converted into a studio space. Typically a home for movement artists practicing spirals and spinal undulations in the Gyrotonic Expansion System, under Evalina Carbonell’s guidance, the space also serves to nurture dancers in their dance practice atop the newly sprung floor and bounding up toward the rustic vaulted ceiling. For Dream Chapters, the artists will inhabit the indoor space while the audience looks from their socially distanced seating arrangements outside in the open air. Stage Manager and Lighting Designer Francis Markocki, who also happens to be a fellow Dance Artist at KYL/D with Weiwei, Wally, and Ariel, is the artful eye and hand behind the personalized lighting, which will be installed in the space specifically for these performances. Other visual surprises await the audience in the form of set/prop/costume pieces, which will weave together the ordinary and the imaginary.
Through persistent and imaginative thinking, Dream Chapters’ artists have created works that herald in a safe return to live performance. It is an honor and a privilege to offer audiences this visual fantasy and a feast for the imagination. Come out to celebrate the dawn of warmer days ahead and enjoy a safe and accessible evening of live dance and theatre.
