Power Play: Making process in performance, August 28

The New York dance company, S.S. and Company will explore power in community during a tumultuous political climate in their upcoming performance on August 28th at 6 pm at the Iron Factory in Philadelphia.

Power Play: Making process in performance is a collection of candid descriptions and stories, covering everything from life in the military and gender identity, to race and gay sexual dynamics. It is the foundation of a rich movement vocabulary comprised of gestures denoting power or the lack there of. For almost five years Artistic Director Eiren Shuman-Sutton has been conducting interviews with varying community members, asking the question what does power in community mean to you? These interviews are then transcribed and edited into monologues that are spoken on stage during the dance.

Eiren Shuman-Sutton has been a mover and shaker for over fifteen years, beginning his formal training in Philadelphia at Temple University, where he received his BFA in 2008. He has also studied dance performance and education at Trinity Laban in the UK and the University of Ghana in West Africa. And most recently completed his MFA at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in 2016. Having had the privilege of working for many amazing artists and performers, Eiren has dedicated his life to movement education and creation for all ages and demographics. Since relocating to New York he has continued his own movement practice and work, starting S.S. and Company in 2017. SS stands for his hyphenated last names and the word company is used to encapsulate a sense of community. Eiren’s work aims to combine the personal with the public, the entertaining with the educational, and the uniquely beautiful with the beautifully mundane.
