En la noche del viernes, en lo que me sumergía en el Norte de Filadelfia, las expectaciones sobre la función de The Backyard como parte de FringeArts Philly seguían ascendiendo. Había buscado en el internet y leído de este maravilloso espacio que estaba abierto para artistas que están en proceso de exploración en el área de Filadelfia. Este espacio lo abrieron Megan Bridge y Peter Price para ofrecer un centro de exploración en el área que fuese accesible. En cuanto entras al edificio, te reciben unas escaleras de madera oscura que añaden al elemento de suspenso, que te llevan al tercer piso.
Al llegar al tercer piso, en ese momento el espacio se abre y la atmósfera inmediatamente cambia. Una atmosfera de bienvenida y familiaridad es lo que te recibe. Los directores están hablando y recibiendo a todos los que llegan a participar como audiencia. El lugar está repleto de tantos objetos que nos recuerdan nuestro día cotidiano: sofás, sillas en distintos estilos, cortinas, la cocina está a la vista, y las hijas de los directores caminan descalzas, acentuando un ambiente liviano y relajado a todos los que llegamos esa noche a participar de esta exploración. Esto va en línea con la filosofía artística de Megan Bridge de cerrar el espacio entre la vida diaria y arte, y entre teoría y práctica. Megan Bridge, es una bailarina, coreógrafa, productora, y escritora en el área de Filadelfia. Unida en colaboración con Peter Price, que es compositor, músico electrónico, artista digital y teorista de multimedia. Ambos dirigen la compañía fidget que se basa en legados de Bauhaus, Ausdruckstanz, y movimientos postmodernistas.
The Backyard es una praxis de método de investigación/descubrimiento, basado en el dueto y colaboración con Lisa Nelson y Steve Paxton PA RT (1978-2002). The Backyard es un dueto en donde se escribe una y otra vez sobre el movimiento que ya ha sido explorado y se sigue añadiendo capas según sigue creciendo la exploración. Con música de Robert Ashley, Megan Bridge y Beau Hanckock nos llevaron por una exploración en donde momentos de reposo e inmovilidad, intercalados con momentos de euforia nos hacían apreciar y poner atención a energía invisible creada y materializándola ante nuestros ojos.
Todos los elementos explorados de espacio, tacto, transferencia de peso, distancia entre los cuerpos, búsqueda de espacio; nos hacía realizar y sentir su conexión de continuidad en la improvisación. Interesante el juego de Megan al borde de lo que se conoce como “escenario” y luego de jugar con nuestra mente, para la satisfacción de la audiencia, finalmente ella sale del espacio delineando para la exploración. Esto resulto en una fuente de liberación. Luego Megan se sienta en la audiencia e, enigmáticamente, la conexión entre los cuerpos permanece. La música creada por Ashley, donde números y monólogo, entrelazada con música electrónica; ¡hace esta exploración de improvisación una llena de adrenalina e intimidad, dejando a la audiencia deseando ver más! Friday night, as submerge into North of the City, my expectations for The Backyard performance as part of Philly Fringe Arts were mounting. I had read of this wonderful space that is open for artists that are in the process of exploration in the Philadelphia area. Megan Bridge and Peter Price opened the space to offer easy access to the artists in the area. As soon as you enter the building, you encounter an old wooden staircase that adds an element of suspense that takes you to the third floor.
Once you arrive on the third floor, the space opens, and the atmosphere changes immediately. It unlocks a welcomed atmosphere full of familiarity. The Directors and performers are mingling with everyone that arrives to attend the evening performance. The space is ample of objects that remind us of our quotidian life: sofas, different styles of wooden chairs, curtains, the kitchen can be seen, even the daughters of the artists are walking in leisure way shoeless reminding us that this is a lived space. It provides a very comforting and light atmosphere. This goes in line with Bridge’s artistic philosophy that intends to close the gap between art and daily life, and theory and practice. Megan Bridge is a dancer, choreographer, producer, and writer in the Philadelphia area. In collaboration with Peter Price, composer, electronic musician, digital artist, and multimedia theorist, co-direct fidget that basis its practice in the legacy of Bauhaus, Ausdruckstanz, and other postmodern methods.
The Backyard is a method of investigation/discovery, based in a duet in collaboration with Lisa Nelson and Steve Paxton PA RT (1978-2002). The Backyard duet is where movement over movement is written again and again, as the exploration develops creating layers as the investigation unfolds. With music by Robert Ashley, Bridge and Beau Hancock guide us through this exploration in which moments of stillness are intertwined with moments of euphoria that makes us appreciate and become aware of invisible energy as it materializes in front of us.
All the elements are explored – space, touch, transfer of weight, the distance between the bodies, eye contact, a search of space; it makes us realize and sense the continuity and connection of the bodies in this improvisation. I found exciting Megan’s game with playful movement with the edge of what we recognize as ‘the stage’. After playing with our mind, and for the audience satisfaction, finally, she comes out of the space designated for exploration. This resulted in a liberating sensation, followed by Megan finding a space in the audience. Even more bewildering is that even at this newly taken position, we could see the connection between the bodies. The music created by Ashley, a monologue, repeating numbers, interwove with electronic music; made this exploration one full of adrenaline and intimacy, leaving the audience desiring more! Blanca Huertas-Agnew comenzó su entrenamiento en su país natal Puerto Rico. Bailo en Ballets de San Juan donde como Principal y Solista bailo repertorio clásico y neoclásico. Su trabajo la llevo a bailar en Estados Unidos, América Central, Sur América, y Europa. Blanca es Maestra Certificada por ABT® National Training Curriculum en los niveles Primarios hasta nivel 8. Esto es una distinción otorgada a maestros que han completado el curso satisfactoriamente. Sus estudiantes han sido aceptados a programas Internacionales como el Royal Ballet y Opera de Paris Intensivos de Verano. También sus estudiantes han sido aceptados a programas Nacionales como American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive, The Cuban Classical Summer Intensive at The School of Ballet Hispánico, The School of Pennsylvania Ballet, and Ellison Summer Intensive en NY. Blanca fue la fundadora y Directora Artística de Pennsylvania Ballet Arts in Chalfont, PA. Blanca obtuvo su grado en Administración de Empresas con concentración en Riesgos y Seguros en Temple University. Mas recientemente recibió su certificación en Progressing Ballet Technique niveles Junior hasta Avanzado. En el 2017, recibió Howard Gilman Fellowship Award at Jacksonville University donde complete sus estudios de Maestría en Artes con concentración en Coreografía. www.blancahuertas-agnew.com
