On Saturday, December 2nd, show your support for Neighborhood House—and your power to zhoosh up our collective existential absurdity—by joining us for our 2017 benefit event: Miguel Gutierrez’s DEEP AEROBICS.
Miguel, who was last in Philadelphia to perform the first two installments of his Age & Beauty trilogy (FringeArts, 2015), will be bringing his participatory communal/political/conceptual/imaginational workout experience to our perfect workout venue: the vintage Neighborhood House gym.
After ten years of DEEP presentations in international venues including Danspace Project, Palais de Tokyo, and right here in Philadelphia (2008, courtesy Philadelphia Dance Projects), Neighborhood House is the last stop on the KILL DEEP AEROBICS 2017 WORLD TOUR and may be host to the final DEEP AEROBICS “ever ever ever.”
Tickets for this event start at just $10. Wear a costume and/or take advantage of our patented onsite Transformation Station. Taste the sweat. All DEEP proceeds will support Neighborhood House performance and rehearsal subsidies, as well as the ongoing development of our artist residency program.
Miguel Gutierrez lives in Brooklyn and makes performances, music, and poetry. He has been called “one of our most provocative and necessary artistic voices” by Eva Yaa Asantewaa at Dance Magazine. Across a variety of disciplines, his work engages persistent philosophical questions about the search for meaning and joins a legacy of process-focused experimental forms, while drawing on influences such as endurance-based performance art, noise music, ecstatic experience in social and religious rituals, the study of mind-body somatic systems, and various histories of spectacle including Broadway and queer club performance.
Miguel’s work has been presented in over fifty cities in the US and around the world, in venues such as the Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York Live Arts, The Kitchen, Danspace Project, American Realness, Live Arts Bard, Walker Art Center, Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, PICA’s TBA Festival, CounterPulse, DiverseWorks, Centre National de la Danse and Centre Pompidou in Paris, ImPulsTanz in Vienna, Kampnagel in Hamburg, BIPOD in Beirut, Festival Universitario de Danza Contemporanea in Bogota, and many others. He was a 2014 Whitney Biennial artist, a 2016 Doris Duke Artist, and the recipient of a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship, a 2010 United States Artist Award, and a 2010 Foundation for Contemporary Art Award. DEEP AEROBICS is a workout form invented and shamelessly disseminated by Miguel Gutierrez, who hopes to soon destroy the technique, because it’s just too hard to teach, and really the world is going to hell in a handbasket anyway. It is one hour-plus of the communal/political/conceptual/imaginational workout experience you always wanted but never could embarrass yourself enough to find or do in public. It is for anyone who has ever had any interest in combining the joie de vivre that is the vigorous bouncing of one’s anatomical/spiritual/energetic molecules with the existential absurdity that is living in a world/country/economic system of injustice, warmongering, and cultural ineptitude. Oh wait, that’s you. Come in a costume of your own devising, whatever that means to you. Taste the sweat.
The DEEP to be enacted in Philadelphia is the last stop on the KILL DEEP AEROBICS 2017 TOUR and may, in fact, end up being the very last DEEP AEROBICS led by Miguel Gutierrez ever ever ever.
