Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers – A Sign of the Times

If you happen to be strolling in South Philadelphia these days, especially along South 9th Street at Washington Ave., E. Passyunk and Wharton, you just may see some new street signs pointing to Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers and the CHI Movement Arts Center at 1316 S 9th St.

Ken Metzner, the Executive Director of the company was more than pleasantly surprised but initially unaware of this neighborhood transformation. “We had no idea!  We did not initiate anything.  It appears to be part of an expansion of the Walk! Philadelphia project originally started by Center City District.”

Ken went on to add, “It’s great that arts organizations are being recognized in this way since so many of us also serve as community hubs and engines of neighborhood revitalization.  Eight years ago, we turned a dilapidated warehouse into KYL/D’s creative home; the center has now become a magnet for arts activity and a tourist attraction with its front and rear mosaic facades by Isaiah Zagar.  This energy has sparked other renovations, migrations and liveliness in our neighborhood.  In 2016, KYL/D served over 9,500 people locally — through the troupe’s performances, classes at our dance center, the InHale Series, subsidized studio rentals and workshops for artists, outreach in the schools, etc.  It looks like the project we started to clean-up the Percy St alleyway is also taking-off with another engaging visual arts project installed on a facade and hopefully more to come soon with performing arts activities along the corridor.”
