Leah Stein Dance Company’s PORTAL will premiere on September 15 as part of the 2016 Philadelphia Fringe Festival at FRIEDA for Generations, Café Atelier Store, 320 Walnut Street, Philadelphia. Performances will take place each date at 6:00 pm. The cost is $20 for general admission, $15 for students and artists. Seating is limited and reservations are recommended. Tickets are available via the Fringe website or at the door. The venue is wheelchair and handicapped accessible.

Site-specific performance work PORTAL – meaning entrance, opening, connecting across thresholds – invites audience and performers to experience unexpected, surprising and spontaneous inter-connections taking place between the street traffic, sidewalk pedestrians, and the indoor café space. The glass door of the Café, surrounded by glass windows, offers a “portal” of communication and interaction. Intentional and spontaneous events of meetings, partings, crossings, interactions, color, costume, sound and movement integrate an intergenerational group of LSDC dancers, community performers, audience and the general public.

According to Hidden City, Frieda’s Café is “a hub for community art workshops, vocational training, industrial design prototyping, and, ultimately, a place to reconnect people of all ages and economic situations. Rather than create yet another place to get coffee, the founders of Frieda for Generations want to bring the young and old together in a forward-thinking, design-minded environment.”

LSDC’s commitment to inter-generational work and connecting people from a wide spectrum of backgrounds, age groups, and communities makes this partnership between the Leah Stein Dance Company and Frieda’s Café a perfect fit.

Now in its 15th anniversary season, Leah Stein Dance Company seeks to deepen and enliven a sense of place by creating works that bring dance to people from diverse backgrounds, age groups and communities. Inspired by the physics of movement and the forces of nature, Artistic Director Leah Stein, along with her dynamic group of talented performers, produces dance works that highlight the interaction between people, their culture and physical environment at major sites throughout the region, including the Fairmount Water Works, Eastern State Penitentiary, Longwood Gardens, Christ Church Burial Ground, and Bartram’s Gardens, among others. Since 2009, the company has enjoyed an ongoing partnership the Science Leadership Academy, where she has created an annual site-specific performance festival with 60 tenth-graders.
