Celebrating World Dance Day in Philadelphia, April 24th

What if the secret to world peace was dancing? Could a good beat and a fun dance mix from around the globe improve international relations? We don’t really know. But locally, the 954 Dance Movement Collective brings the world a little closer together at Philadelphia’s 7th annual World Dance Day festival, happening at The Piazza at Schmidt’s in Northern Liberties at North Second Street and Germantown Avenue on Sunday, April 24, 2016 (rain date, Sunday, May 1, 2016).

Partnering with movement artists and organizations in the Greater Philadelphia community, the 954 Dance Movement Collective will be presenting dances from all over the world in a fun one-day mash-up showing all the optimism the spring season has to offer. UNESCO established World Dance Day on April 29th in 1982 to spread the joy of dance to the general public. World Dance Day in Philadelphia will once again take place on the last Sunday in April. This event is FREE for all ages, fun for the whole family; offering performances and dance classes for everyone – absolute beginners are welcomed!

World Dance Day in Philadelphia is the great thing that happens when local dance artists and teachers get together to celebrate Philly dance. For the seventh year in a row, performance groups, dancers, choreographers and teachers are donating their talents for this free fun family outdoor event celebrating the power of dance to keep the body, heart and mind a little healthier and happier.

Participating artists include Sattriya Dance Company (Indian Classical Dances), Dancing Classrooms All-Stars (Ballroom), Aloha Style on the Mainline (Hawaiian and Tahitian), ContempraDANCE Theatre Company, Temple University’s InMotion Dance Ensemble, Lalitha Dance Troupe (Indian Folk Dances), and many many more.

World Dance Day PERFORMANCES showcase a variety of dance styles. Past dance styles have varied from Bharata Natyam Classical Indian Dance, Hip Hop, Improv, Hawaiian Hula, Argentine Tango, modern, Polish folk dances, Indonesian, Flamenco and many more. The first performance hour starts at 12:00PM. The second starts at 2:00PM.

Between the performances, stop by for World Dance Day’s TEACH-IN – from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM. Enjoy this great opportunity to try out dance classes of different disciplines including Flamenco, Bollywood Dancing, Modern, Yoga, Rhumba, Salsa, Hip Hop, Ballet and more. World Dance Day’s teach-in offers 20-minute classes. You have the option of experiencing one dance style for the hour or trying two or three. Always wanted to do salsa? Trying to get your bae to tango? Missed your calling as a hip hop dancer? The World Dance Day teach-in is a great opportunity to try something new!
