Almanac Dance Circus Theatre, Philadelphia’s trailblazing contemporary acrobatics company, premieres Leaps of Faith and Other Mistakes June 25 – 28, 2015 inside Fleisher Art Memorial’s historic Sanctuary space at 719 Catherine Street in South Philadelphia.
A seventy-five minute work of dance theatre incorporating feats of balance, strength, and flexibility, Leaps of Faith and Other Mistakes is an absurd and contemplative tapestry of sublime human idiocy, isolationist seafarer cults, and the kinds of people that devote their lives to becoming acrobats. In the work—created and performed by Nicole Burgio, Nick Gillette, Ben Grinberg, and Adam Kerbel, with words by Josh McIlvain and music written and performed by Patrick Lamborn—four hobbyists find each other alone in a world of weirdos, and push themselves to be “exceptional in every moment.” As they purify themselves and adopt an all-white uniform, their trusty sofa becomes a portal for exploration and they set out on the high-seas and leave the world of fast-food and normal people behind.
The performance will offer the public an opportunity to see live performance inside the historic Sanctuary Space at Fleisher Art Memorial, a dramatic and well-preserved space most often used for weddings and painting classes. Fleisher Art Memorial is generously partnering with Almanac to allow the company to create site-specific elements for the performance and engage with the space’s architecture through acrobatic body shapes. The space’s remarkable acoustics will highlight the partially improvised musical score that Lamborn will create using upright bass, singing bowls, and electronics.
Performances will take place June 25 and 26 at 8pm; June 27 at 2pm & 8pm; and June 28 at 2pm & 5pm. A reception will follow the opening night performance on June 25. Admission is $25, or $12 Student/Artist, tickets are available at online at almanac.brownpapertickets.com or at the door. Discounted tickets are also available for a preview performance on June 24 at 8pm.
Leaps of Faith and Other Mistakes is funded by the Philadelphia Cultural Fund, the Pennsylvania Partners for the Arts Project Stream, and by the Samuel S. Fels Fund. Almanac is the resident company at the Philadelphia School of Circus Arts and are artists-in-residence and Mascher Space Cooperative. Leaps of Faith was created in part through a residency in Montreal with Cirque du Soleil’s Jerome Le Baut and Cirque Eloize’s Robert Bourgeoisie. Almanac is committed to donating at least ten percent of its tickets to those who would not otherwise have access to the arts, and partners with organizations such as Art Reach to achieve this goal.
