Koresh Dance Company Premieres AFTERSHOCK

This spring, Koresh Dance Company brings new contemporary work and a fashion-themed gala to the Suzanne Roberts Theatre. The company recently hailed as “the most exciting dance experience in Philadelphia” (Philadelphia Weekly) will premiere Ronen Koresh’s latest work, Aftershock, March 26-28. On Saturday, March 28, the performance will form a part of Koresh Kouture: A High Fashion Silent Auction and Gala, complete with wine tastings, a reception, and fashion displays by Philadelphia designers.

Aftershock, a world premiere

Culture shock in hindsight, Aftershock is Artistic Director Ronen Koresh’s reflection on his emigration from Israel to the United States in the 1980s, and its impact on his artistic development and identity. “Israel is a huge part of my life,” Koresh told the St. Louis Jewish Light earlier this year. “It’s what defines me as a person—the culture, the tension, the love of life, the passion, the heat, the music and food, the complexity of racial and cultural integration. But my work is Middle Eastern culture coupled with American experience,” he adds. “Culture shock shakes your core. Then you live, you create, shaken up.”

Through the powerful athleticism and lyrical lines of the synchronized Koresh Company dancers, Aftershock illustrates the dangers and difficulties of building artistic integrity in a new place—the reverberation of hostile receptions, the challenge of gaining acceptance, and the risk of losing oneself to the expectations of a new environment.

On Friday, March 27, the performance will be followed by Talk over Drinks: A Conversation with the Artists. Audience members are invited to bring a drink into the theater and gather near the stage to ask Ronen Koresh and the company dancers about the process and experience of devising and performing Aftershock.

Koresh Kouture

Koresh Kouture: a High Fashion Performance, Silent Auction + Gala will take place on Saturday, March 28, 6-10pm, at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre. Over 250 art and culture aficionados are expected to attend this gathering to show support for Philly’s “most expressive dance company” (Philadelphia Inquirer). The Host Committee, spearheaded by fashionista Joan Shepp, will present a premiere performance of Aftershock paired with an elegant reception. Trendy Philadelphia fashion designers including Bela Shehu, Victoria Wright, Jovan O’Connor, and Terese Brown will dress the Koresh dancers in their unique designs for the reception.
