FringeArts’ Festival favorite since 1999, Brian Sanders’ JUNK, presents SUSPENDED on September 5-8, 11-14, 17-20, 2014. SUSPENDED is a raw, brash, erotic, extreme, electrifying performance that uses physical prowess and strong adult content to create a conflicted state of mind.
Since 1992, Brian Sanders and his company, JUNK has left audiences spellbound by the intricacies and daredevil risks of Sanders’ ingenious choreography. Dance critics have hailed JUNK as “accessible, technically flawless and thrilling” and declare Sanders as “the city’s most exciting choreographer” and “one of Philadelphia’s greatest cultural treasures.”
“I want the audience to feel SUSPENDED” says Artistic Director, Brian Sanders, “adrift in a series of opposing sensations … that strange sensation somewhere between joy and terror, like the plummet on a roller coaster. Laughing and crying at the same time. Is it painful or sublime? The sensation similar to feeling hot and cold simultaneously. Not numb, but caught, in sheer silence and stillness. A place of both beauty and unloveliness”
SUSPENDED will be performed by a predominantly male cast, including founder Brian Sanders, in JUNK’s massive studio, housed in the soaring nave of Shiloh Baptist Church at 2040 Christian Street, 2nd floor, Philadelphia. In 2012 JUNK formed a partnership with Partners for Sacred Places, a nonprofit organization which preserves historic houses of worship by renting space to social service organizations and art groups to help defray the costs of maintaining the building. JUNK fans expect the unexpected … so the 60” ceiling and reverent architecture should be no surprise as an intriguing site-specific Fringe creation.
Tickets range from $30-75/person. Performances start at 9pm and last 45 minutes. Limited Locker Room Pre-Show tickets are available at 8:30pm for admission to the adjacent chapel, where guests can share a more intimate moment with the artists. The exclusive prelude will include JUNK’s creative version of bathing by candlelight and rat-tail towel wars– available with VIP Lounge Seating for $75/person.
