Celebrated the world over for its artistry, superbly-trained dancers and electrifying performances, PHILADANCO will perform under the stars at The Dell Music Center on Friday, July 18 at 7:30 pm. Tickets to the multi-cultural dance concert start at just $10, and proceeds benefit PHILADANCO. Described as “exuberant” by The New York Times and “a miracle of skill and energy,” by Dance Magazine, the company performs nationally and internationally and regularly premieres new productions. It was founded in 1970 in West Philadelphia out of a need to provide opportunities for African-American dancers who were denied entrance to many local dance schools. PHILADANCO has grown into a company regarded for its artistic integrity, innovation, creativity and preservation of the predominantly African-American traditions of dance.

The program includes Ottis Redding’s music for the ballet ‘Suite Otis,’ by George Faison, choreographer of The Wiz on Broadway. Also on stage will be guest artists from The Pure Project (Artistic Director Itola Byrd), Fuego Dance Theater (Artistic Director Hector Serrano), the award-winning Just Sole: Street Dance Theater, Iquail & Company and more.

“This is an incredible opportunity for families to experience world-renowned dance and enjoy a beautiful night in Fairmount Park at an affordable price,” says Susan Slawson, First Deputy Commissioner Recreation & Programs, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation. “PHILADANCO bridges cultural divides and consistently performs for sold-out audiences representing people from all communities. This concert is one more way area residents can enjoy a variety of arts and culture at The Dell – dance, theatre, and a wide array of music.”

This is the third annual Founder’s Day concert: a tribute to founder Joan Myers Brown and a benefit for the dance company. “Joan Myers Brown is a Philadelphia treasure who established her company on opportunity, inclusion and hope. She has brought renown and pride to our City with her international leadership and her many accolades including the 2012 National Medial of the Arts presented by President Barack Obama. We are happy to give area residents the opportunity to support PHILADANCO while enjoying the amazing company and legacy she has created,” added Slawson.

Tickets are available online at, The Dell Music Center Box Office and by calling PHILADANCO at 215 387-8200.
