The Temple University Dance Department is pleased to announce that our third choreographic commission under our Reflection:Response speaker and performance series has been awarded to choreographer, composer, and director Tatyana Tenenbaum.
This new commission will premiere on October 24 and 25, 2014 in the Conwell Theater at Temple University. The commission includes a cash award of $5,000, access to rehearsal space throughout summer 2014, and production of the new work in Conwell Dance Theater. Past commission recipients include Laura Peterson and Charles O. Anderson.
Tatyana Tenenbaum will be in residence in the Department of Dance throughout summer 2014, to create Thunder, a hybrid theatrical work that explores the relationships between vocal production and movement and the continuum between speech and song and which references theatrical histories that tap pagan mythology as a means of accessing wonder, beauty, magic and nature. Thunderwill be performed by Emily Moore, Laurel Snyder, and Tatyana Tenenbaum along with students of the Department of Dance.
In her work, Tatyana Tenenbaum explores sound and movement within a shared perceptual framework. Based in Brooklyn, NY, her work has been presented throughout NYC as well as in Chicago, Los Angeles and Bogotá, Colombia. Her work has received critical praise from writer Elizabth Zimmer, the NY Times and the Brooklyn Rail. As a performer and collaborator she has worked closely with Yoshiko Chuma & The School of Hard Knocks, Daria Fain & Robert Kocik, Jennifer Monson and Levi Gonzalez among others. She was a vocalist for PERFORMA 2014 and appeared in work by Joan La Barbara (The Guggenheim) and Norwegian artist Tori Wranes. She received dual degrees in dance and music composition from Oberlin College & Conservatory of Music.
