by Steven Weisz for The Dance Journal
Before I ever started PhiladelphiaDANCE.org, my involvement with the dance community began in the mid-1970’s when as a student at University of Pennsylvania, I started a special events agency, Rainbow Promotions Inc. As one of the largest event producers in Philadelphia, we booked quiet a variety of dance acts for events throughout the city. Many of these early acts, I manage to capture on video and have had stored away for quite some time. In order to preserve this small slice of Philadelphia’s dance history, I hope to restore these tapes and be able to digitize them to the web.
So for your your first installment from the past, I have restored from 1987 a presentation by KYW’s Evening Magazine Dancers in a fashion show at The Cheltenham Mall. If you look carefully, you may see a few of Philadelphia’s current and more notable choreographers and dancers in this feature – Roni Koresh, Myra Brazell and Rex Henriques to name a few! Evening Magazine was one of the most successful formats in local television history. In Philadelphia, it ran on KYW-TV until 1993 and was hotsed by Ray Murray and Nancy Glass. The Evening Magazine Dancers were a regular segment.
Steven is currently the CEO of Delaware Valley on Line, one of the first regional Internet Service Provides that now focuses on business-class web hosting, design, and internet marketing. He is president and founder of Rainbow Promotions Inc., a special events and entertainment agency established in the late 70’s, that services corporate and retail accounts both locally and nationally.
Steven is the Founder of PhiladelphiaDANCE.org,the largest web presence and resource for the dance community in the greater Philadelphia region, and the Founder and Editor of The Dance Journal. His involvement in the dance community extends to being Director of Graffito Works, an international platform for dancers and performing artists to create site-specific work and to make it readily accessible to the public.
