Unique to the Philadelphia landscape, the Performance Garage was originally a horse stable and automobile garage. Renovated in December 2002, it was transformed into a versatile dance space that includes both rehearsal studios and theater for all forms of dance. The Performance Garage continues to be an incubator for classes, rehearsals, workshops and productions.
To an enthusiastic crowd of both professional dancers and general community, The Performance Garage held its first annual Dance Marathon on Saturday, May 4th from 11am – 11pm. With perfect weather, a large number of the activities were held on the street with a full schedule of drop-in classes as well as dance performances by such groups as Alchemy Dance Company, Raphael Xavier, Brat Productions, Tangle Movement Arts and Habiba Dance Ensemble.
The 12-hour event on the 1500 block of Brandywine Street also sought to bring together local restaurants and businesses, thereby bridging the gap between the Performance Garage and the Spring Garden and Fairmount neighborhoods.
Being one of the few professional dance spaces accessible to the professional dance community, it is the hope that fundraisers such as today’s will enable the Performance Garage to continue its work for some time in to the future.
