3 x 3 – Movement Voices for a Bharatanatyam Dancer

The Hindu goddess Devi takes on many incarnations, and in an exploration of Indian dance, soloist Viji Rao will portray three of these forms through three different choreographic works on Friday, October 19, 2012 at 7:00PM at the Painted Bride.

Viji Rao was one of seven individual artists to receive funding from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage through their prestigious Dance Advance initiative. The funding supported a project for Viji to work in Canada, India and the United States to commission three new works in three Indian dance forms from three different choreographers. The project culminates in her solo performance “3 x 3: Movement Voices for a Bharatanatyam Dancer.”

The creative departure point for the performance is the Hindu goddess Devi in three of her many incarnations that represent the multi-faceted approach to this dance project. There is Devi, life-force of the universe, Durga the invincible warrior, and Kali the fierce destroyer.

The choreography was created by internationally respected artists: Professor C.V. Chandrasekhar, Hari Krishnan and Santosh Nair. 3×3 focuses on three dance movement vocabularies—classical and contemporary Bharatanatyam, and Chhau. This focus enables Viji to examine in-depth pure Indian dance movement as a soloist.
