Dance For Dreams performance benefits children with special needs

On Saturday, June 30th, 2012 at 7:30pm at Kaleidoscope Theater, Ursinus College, 601 E. Main Street, Collegeville, PA, a diverse line up of area dancers and dance companies will come together to benefit Hope Dances and children with special needs.

The goal of Hope Dances is to affect the lives of children with special needs in a way that is engaging, fun and therapeutic, using dance and movement. The program hosts monthly dance classes with area professionals in a variety of genres, as well as trips to see performances.

Founded in 2010 by dance photographer, Brian Mengini, this project has taken on special meaning as his son, Dominic was diagnosed at the age of 4 with sensory processing disorder (SPD), a neurological condition that makes it difficult for him to take in and process sensory information about his environment and his body. Brian found that dance worked on coordination, provided exercise, promoted body awareness and offered a social aspect as well.

This year’s benefit being held at the Kaleidoscope Theater of Ursinus College on Saturday, June 30th at 7:30pm will feature a diverse and formidable line up including Project Moshen Dance Co, Mindy Kendi, Footwerx Tap Company, Allie Parsons, Camille Brown, Jessica Warchal-King, Ballet Fleming, Emily Teitelbaum, Jennifer Gordon, A special piece by the Hope Dances Contemporary Class, Lauren and Francis Veyette of the Pennsylvania Ballet, Sasha & Lise Ramsay and “Born this Way” a special piece choreographed by Baltimore based dancer, Marissa Montanez, using local dance students. Every genre of dance is represented from ballet to tap to hip hop and contemporary.

The proceeds from the evening will go entirely towards the benefit of Hope Dances to allow them to continue to offer programs and services throughout the year. For more information about Hope Dances, visit their web site at www.hopedances.org
