The Philadelphia Argentine Tango School to present the 2nd Philadelphia Tango Festival

The Philadelphia Argentine Tango School will host the 2nd Philadelphia Tango Festival, an four-day extravaganza of tango workshops, performances and social dancing, from May 25-28, 2012.   Featuring a stellar line-up of tango luminaries from around the U.S. and Argentina, the festival is open to all tango dancers (and aspiring dancers) from Philadelphia and beyond.

Festival events will take place in the city’s famed R.U.B.A Club ballroom (414 Green Street, Philadelphia, PA) and in the  studio space of the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School (2030 Frankford Avenue, Philadelphia, PA).  Attendees will have the opportunity to study with some of the country’s most renowned tango professionals, including Nick Jones and Diana Cruz, Adam Hoopengardner and Ciko Tanik, Angeles Chanaha, Damian Lobato, and Evan Griffiths.  Nightly milongas (tango social dances) featuring celebrated DJs, an after-hours fiesta on Saturday night, and performances by festival maestros, local tango luminaries Marc Hussner and Kristina McFadden, and ballet master Kip Martin make this an event not to be missed.  Additionally, Argentine yogi and tango aficionada Monica Moya will offer a daily yoga warm-up designed to keep festival-goers dancing all day and night.

Festival classes range from absolute beginner to advanced.  A  four day Absolute Beginner Track will introduce newcomers to the basics of tango vocabulary, structure, technique and lead-and-follow improvisation, allowing the tango novice to take full advantage of the festival.  Registration options include a complete festival pass, and class and milonga passes according to level or day.  Individual classes and milongas may be purchased through the festival dates, according to availability.  A limited number of private lesson slots are also available.

The Philadelphia Argentine Tango School was founded in 2008 to offer top-notch instruction in Argentine tango to beginners through professional dancers in Philadelphia.  In addition to group and private lessons, the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School offers a weekly práctica, monthly milongas and occasional larger events.  We organized the 1st Philadelphia International Tango Festival in May 2010, and have hosted two major electronic tango bands, Otros Aires and Tanghetto, in addition to workshops with world-renowned tango instructors.  In addition to teaching in Philadelphia, our instructors regularly travel to teach and perform worldwide.  In the past two years, Philadelphia Argentine Tango Instructors have taught in England, France, Spain, Poland, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Canada, and throughout the US.  In October 2009, School Founders Andrés Amarilla and Meredith Klein established a permanent studio in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia.  They are enthusiastically collaborating with other local arts and development organizations to help build a robust Frankford Ave Arts Corridor.
