A former Rowan faculty member returns to present an original dance piece, in conjunction with the exhibition at the Rowan University Art Gallery, on Wednesday, October 26 at 7 pm.
Olive Prince – an award winning, Philadelphia-based dancer/choreographer and experimental video artist who has taught at Rowan – offers this unique performance, which integrates with a cut glass installation by Summer Yates, one of the works displayed in the exhibit, “Repetition: Repetition:” which runs through November 10.
Olive Prince Dance, led by choreographer/movement artist Olive Prince, performs intense, psychologically gripping, playful and sometimes erotic dance, employing a wide variety of genres, spaces and props. Prince is known for choreography that questions, attempting to make sense of experiences in a changing contemporary world. Her work has been presented at numerous locations including the Live Arts Festival, Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts, nEW Festival, the International Contemporary Dance Conference in Poland, Dance Ensemble Singapore commission by the junior company, and as a resident artist at Susan Hess Choreographer’s Project.
This multi-media exhibit, curated by Philadelphia’s Michael Gardner, showcases work that explores a “synergistically enhanced aesthetic” created through the use of repetitive action and/or materials. The exhibition strives to evoke questions from viewers concerning consciousness, impulse, patterning, repetition, obsession and compulsion.
The work includes Yates’ installation, as well as Leslie Atik’s site installation of merchandize tags; Thomas Bugaj’s time lapse video documenting the building of the Comcast Center over a three year period; a collaborative video by filmmaker Bill Morrison and composer Vijay Iyer originally created for Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia (the video was made from footage discovered at the Fox Movietone collection held by the University of South Carolina’s Newsfilm library documenting the release of the notorious Al Capone); Matt Giel’s 150 ft long photograph; Mark Khaisman’s light boxes of chair imagery created by using only masking tape; Jacque Liu’s milk painting installation on windows and walls that mimic the architectural details of the space; Jessica Hoffman’s installation of every seven letter word in the English language typed out one by one on a roll of paper; Abby Schmidt’s mixed media painting made of hundreds of miniature plastic toy soldiers; and a work by TOTD’s artist collaborative.
Admission is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 10 am to 5 pm (with extended hours on Wednesdays to 7 pm); and Saturday, 12 to 5 pm.
