Meredith Rainey, Matthew Neenan and Kate Watson-Wallace debut new works set to the last songs written by composers prior to their deaths in the full-length concert: Swan Songs
Meredith Rainey’s newly founded Carbon Dance Theatre, will premiere three new works set to the last songs ever written/recorded by celebrated and extremely diverse music artists, including Richard Strauss, Nick Drake, Tupac, Franz Schubert and Amy Winehouse.
The five performances, opening October 26, 2011 will explore memory and mortality on the weekend of All Hallow’s Eve with three of Philadelphia’s most celebrated choreographers; Meredith Rainey (Winner of the AWARD Show, 2011), Matthew Neenan (Ballet X, Pennsylvania Ballet), and Kate Watson-Wallace (anonymous bodies, 2007 Pew Fellow).
“Mortality is the physical reality all people face with their spirituality, intelligence, but most of all, their bodies. By exploring the last songs of a wide range of composers and singers, we ask the audience members to contemplate life and those who have passed on a weekend designated to celebrate and acknowledge the after life,” says Meredith Rainey, Pennsylvania Ballet soloist for 20 years, and established choreographer .” I want this evening to inspire and entertain the audience, and to explore through physical movement one’s own relationship to mortality.
This full-length concert, launching Carbon Dance Theatre’s inaugural season will be the company’s official debut. The season continues with Testimony, a co-production with the Smoke, Lilies and Jade Arts Initiative and dance theatre X. Carbon Dance Theatre will also be featured in Danse 4 Nia’s February concert.
Carbon Dance Theatre creates projects that empower performers and entertain audiences by creating work that is rooted in classical ballet and infused with the collaborative process of theatre.
