Enriching a Community with Dance

The second annual Norristown DanceFest will take place again at the Montgomery County Cultural Center in Norristown, Pennsylvania on August 27 and 28, 2010 beginning at 8:00pm.   After last year’s two sold out shows, Norristown residents are anticipating another two evenings of noteworthy dance.

Created in an effort to promote the arts in one of Philadelphia’s culturally growing suburbs, Norristown DanceFest will highlight the works of eight unique professional dance companies from across the tri-state area creating two full evenings packed with modern, contemporary, classical Indian and theatrical dance.

The performing companies participating are Chisena Danza, fiN-Nej Dance Co., Mano/Damno Projects, idiosynCrazy Productions, Stone Depot Dance Lab, Srividya Angara, Kate Jordan Dance, and Philadelphia Dance Theatre. Each company will be presenting innovative works from prominent choreographers, enriching the community with dance.

Chisena Danza and Mano /Damno Projects collaborated with musicians who have created original scores for the pieces, adding another dimension to the DanceFest.   The featured musicians are Monique Canniere on violin, Jonathan Cannon on upright bass, Jonathan Salmon on cello, and Jacob Mitas on viola.  All of these musicians will be playing live for each performance.

Another addition to this year’s performance is Classical Indian Dancer Srividya Angara.  She will be performing a solo in the Kuchipudi style of Indian dance.

Norristown DanceFest evolved in collaboration with Melissa Chisena, director of Chisena Danza, and Norristown business owner Doug Seiler, principal of Seiler and Drury Architecture.  Mr. Seiler was the community catalyst, Ms. Chisena, the project coordinator.  Ms. Chisena also received Municipality support from Gabriella Ibarra.

Norristown is currently undergoing a cultural and historical renaissance and bringing dance to the community is a part of it.  A committee titled “The Norristown Arts and Cultural District Task Force” was created to expand the arts and cultural scene in the Municipality.  With the help of local business owners and The Norristown Municipality, Chisena was again able to put together two evenings of diverse dance.  She chose the Montgomery County Cultural Center, located right in the heart of Norristown, to give a local and accessible venue for the festival.

The Norristown DanceFest’s mission is to enrich the community with the arts and to bring audiences from Norristown and its suburbs, creating unity and inspiration in these times of uncertainty.
