Inside the Mind of A Dancer

A Free Lecture-Demonstration For All Ages

BalletX presents a free public interactive lecture-demonstration Inside the Mind of A Dancer exploring the process of movement creation and memorization for all ages, with co-artistic directors Christine Cox and Matthew Neenan,  Sunday, April 18, 11:00 AM – 11:45 AM at The Wilma Theater, 265 S. Broad Street, Philadelphia. FREE admission. Due to limited seating, pre-registration is required by email to [email protected], with the subject line “Lecture reservation.” Seats are unassigned.  For more information visit www. balletx.org or call 215-280-4824.

Since BalletX was founded in 2005, many of its patrons have expressed growing interest in the process of dance creation.  How do choreographers invent their moves and how in the world do dancers memorize their steps?

Building on its creative foundation, BalletX co-directors Christine Cox and Matthew Neenan are committed to provide educational opportunities for diverse audiences through workshops and lecture demonstrations.  Inside the Mind of A Dancer was first presented at the Rock School of Ballet Education in 2006 and 2007, and was enthusiastically received by those in attendance.  “This presentation is a behind-the-scenes look at the choreographic process and the rigorous training that goes into the making of a professional dancer,” says Cox.

BalletX is dedicated to providing an outreach program that allows children of all ages to experience first-hand the perspective, insights and mind-set of the professional ballet dancer. “We realize that ballet is something for women and men of all ages and backgrounds to experience and enjoy, says Neenan, – and we want to be the ones sharing this joy of dance with them.”

The company has developed successful community outreach initiatives with various partnering organizations (including the Free Library of Philadelphia, Project H.O.M.E. and the Philadelphia Museum of Art) where, in addition to dance basics, youngsters learn why dance is important as an art form, how dance reflects the real world, and what it is like to be a dancer.  The BalletX workshop activities are up-close, personal, and engaging – not mere demonstrations of ballet form.  Participants learn that dancers are athletes – strong, healthy individuals who thrive in an atmosphere of hard work and discipline in order to make it in this challenging profession. Students discover a way to channel their emotions into physical movement.

Inside the Mind of a Dancer continues this fascinating discussion with expanded audience outreach at The Wilma Theater, within the framework of the BalletX Spring Series 2010, April 14-18.
