Miro Dance Theatre Presents U.S. Premiere of How Am I Not Myself?

What happens when two people who have never met find out they¹ve been living parallel lives for more than 30 years? The answer more than a year in the making will premiere at the Painted Bride Art Center in Philadelphia on January 29 and 30.

How Am I Not Myself? with Indian classical dancer Viji Rao is the latest original production from Philadelphia-based Miro Dance Theatre.

In December, Miro toured How Am I Not Myself? in two cities in India: Bangalore and Ahmadabad. Miro’s producing director and video documentarian Tobin Rothlein recorded their trip in a series of video blogs available via www.mirodancetheatre.org and www.phillyist.com.

Born a couple of days apart on opposite sides of the world, Miller and Rao both began their classical training at the age of four. Now, thirty years later, following professional classical careers, they are both engaged in their own unique forms of contemporary dance.

In How Am I Not Myself?, together with Tobin Rothlein’s video artistry, Miller and Rao dance their stories in an exciting new work of mythology, media, and madness.

“This is a work about bridging identities and cultures through time and movement” says Miller.

“Bringing How Am I Not Myself? home to Philadelphia is an exciting challenge for us, artistically”, she says. “Dance audiences familiar with the classical ballet form and training will be especially familiar with the joys and struggles that this new work presents.”

About Miro Dance Theatre
Miro Dance Theatre creates and performs original work that explores the collaborative intersections of contemporary dance, video, and visual art.

In 2004, dancer and choreographer Amanda Miller and video and visual artist Tobin Rothlein founded Miro Dance Theatre in order to realize their unique creative vision, and explore the intersections of contemporary dance, video, and visual art. Miller, with ten years experience as a dancer at the Pennsylvania Ballet and choreographic studies in Europe under Siobhan Davies, is at the helm of Miro’s choreographic exploration.

Rothlein, whose work as video artist and visual designer for Rennie Harris Puremovement and others has garnered accolades nationally and internationally, oversees the company’s work in combining dance, multi-media and visual arts. Miro produces the work of Miller and Rothlein alongside special collaborations with invited friends and guests.
