Watch out, the rapping SugarPlum Fairy is coming to town!

This time of year, it has become a tradition for so many families to attend an annual  performance of the Nutcracker. But another holiday tradition has been brewing in Philadelphia for over six years now – Philly-Nutt-Crak-Up.

This crazy holiday take-off of the Nutcracker is based on an original rap song written by the SugarPlum Fairy herself. A story filled with superheroes, kung-fu fighting, and even making friends at the Kingdom of Prussia, the “Philly-Nutt-Crak-Up”offers a memorable experience for all ages. The story line to this dance mayhem is  filled with references to local Philadelphia places, personalities, foods and skylines. And this year, even a surprise twist to the Phillies playoff games!

Direction and choreography for this hilarious holiday dance spoof, is provided Gail Vartanian of ContempraDance Theatre.  Vartanian, seeing so many Nutcracker productions in the area, felt that there was a need to provide another dance experience – one filled with battling Hip Hoppin Rats, City Hall Dolls, Captain Philadelphia and yes, even Liberty Belle-Anne!

The production has a full cast with fifteen profesisonal dancers, accompanied by  twenty child dancers, ages seven to sixteen.  It blends a variety of styles including hip-hop, jazz, modern and ballet. And of course mixed with these genres of dance is a more than healthy dose of comedy.

Appropriate for all audiences of all ages, the Philly-Nutt-Crak-Up continues to attract new and younger audiences. For some it is their first exposure to a live dance performance, and one that is sure to become a new holiday tradition.

Philly-Nutt-Crak-Up will be performed on December 11th at 7:30 PM and then on December 12th at 2:30 PM and 7:30 PM at the Mandell Theater located on 33rd and Chestnut Street, Drexel University. Tickets are available online at www.DanceBoxOffice.com

The show, which is known for its popular characters has added a “Meet & Greet”after the 2:30 PM show on Saturday, so be sure to bring your cameras!
