Humorous dance inspired by homemakers circa 1935 and a whole lot more

CEC

The Community Education Center (CEC) will be kicking off its 25th Anniversary Season with an inventive group of young artists bringing fort distinctive mix dance and theatre offerings. Look for humorous dance, inspired by homemakers circa 1935, as created by Jennifer Morley; the acrobatics of physical theatre artist, Mary Tuomanen, who will literally fly from the rafters; and new offerings from dancers/choreographers Ami Dowden-Fant, Kate Speer, and Alie Vidich. Performances take place Friday and Saturday, November 6-7 at 8pm, and Sunday, the 8th at 3pm at the CEC Meeting House Theatre, located at 3500 Lancaster Avenue in University City.

Ami Dowden-Fant will perform her latest creation aptly titled obsession(2) the T, a coming out story about her secret obsession with all things fashionable.

In Hot Flashes, Jennifer Morley’s duet with Shannon Murphy, two adept 1953 homemakers seek domestic triumph using the tools of the trade to spar in the arena of the living room. Each seeking to maintain a foothold as the queen of home economy, these women incite one another into heated kinetic fits of cleaning and coffee talk. Eventually the surface cracks and these “ladies of the house” abandon pretension to find their own personal truths.

A man hiding behind his trench coat…an overly friendly girl with pig-tails…a young woman with knee high rain boots and a bright red umbrella, all come to life in life in Kate Speer’s The Walrus and the Camel. These storybook like characters meet under the most peculiar circumstances and through the mayhem find that they are each carrying something similar hidden from view. This kid-friendly show is an adventure story to be shared by all ages.

Mary Tuomanen

Mary Tuomane will perform LA BELLE PENDUE or, Another Type Of Flying. Using circus movement and French cabaret, she tells the story of Clarissa, the amazing hanging woman, or “la Belle Pendue”. The work which is written by Mary and directed by Leah Walton, looks at love and friendship between young women, madness, and the difficulty of growing up.
Ali Vidich, photo by Deborah Boardman Alie Vidich and the Movement Brigade will perform a group work entitled Mo and Moe’s Lucid Dance Dream, an amusing look at how our consumption habits creep into our dream life. Choreographed and directed by Alie, the work will be performed by Alie, Ellie Goudie-Averill, Tim Popp, and Daniele Strawmyre.
