Three frames, one picture

As the audience filters into their seats, on stage sit three framed young women, each beginning her character’s transformation, at the hands of professional make-up artists.  In their eloquently styled, movement accentuating costumes, these three women set “The Scene”, each in her own frame, performing in bold spotlights. These solos are but mere glimpses into each woman.  Through their twists and turns, unknown territory is revealed. They dance in and out of light and shadow, and come to venture off into the darkness. They, along with the audience, seek and possibly find what is behind the scenes.

Rachel Hammer, a make-up artist, bases her work around her strong visual sense.  Her movements are detailed in shapes and lines, and compliment, as well as contort, the bodies of her dancers.  She has created three in depth solos to fit each individual dancer, a glimpse into their characters.

Alyse Landis, a Yoga and massage practitioner, is inspired by energy exchanges between people, and one’s awareness of Self in space.  Her movement explores the sensation of being on one’s center vs being or falling off center.  She choreographs a couple of group sections that explore the duality between mind and body that exists when the spirit is not centered.

Samantha Jakus, a raw mover, explores and performs structured improvisation.  In a quest to find the extremes of her body, her choreography spans from exhaustion and defiance.  In the third section, she structures a duet with her and Hammer, sharing the contrast of their extremes.

Each of these three young women manage to maintain the integrity of her voice, in this cohesive one-hour dance creation – “The Scene”
