This just in from the Philadelphia Greater Cultural Alliance…
…..And the budget process rolls along. On Tuesday afternoon, the House Appropriations Committee met to discuss the Senate version of the state budget, SB 850. After lively discussion and consideration of citizen testimony from public hearings, the bill was defeated in committee, 20-14, with votes along party lines. Thanks to your work, Appropriations heard you loud and clear.
The ball is now back in Governor Rendell’s court, and he will present a new budget proposal for the House of Representatives to consider. Here’s the catch: he needs to cut $400-500 million off his original proposal to reflect the growing deficit, which now exceeds $3 billion.
Here’s where you come in: remind the Governor to invest and arts and culture. Once again we’ve made it easy for you to write a letter – just fill in your name with your contact information, and hit that “Send This Message” button. Personal edits and stories, however, are encouraged. How will cuts affect your organization? Will your children lose their after-school arts programs?
I don’t need to remind you how important museums, theaters, libraries, artists, musicians, historical homes, and dancers are to our region. Unfortunately, we’ve been dangerously close to the chopping block for quite some time now. Take action today, or hold food for the mind and soul at risk.
