Koresh in Israel to take part in The Spring Festival in Rishon Lezion

Koresh Dance Company traveled to Roni Koresh’s homeland of Israel to perform for the very first time in the International Spring Festival, Rishon LeZion

Raised in Israel, Ronen Koresh, artistic director of Koresh Dance Company, began his dance education as a youth, training and dancing with his mother, a folk dancer in the Yemenite tradition, and with a local Tel Aviv folk dance group.  At seventeen, he moved on to more comprehensive study with Martha Graham’s Batsheva Dance Company.  Following a three year enlistment in the Israeli army, he decided to pursue a career in dance and moved to the United States.  He spent a year studying at the Alvin Ailey Dance School in New York, but it was in Philadelphia that Ronen chose to spend his life and establish his company – Koresh Dance Company.  Since the company’s founding in 1992, Koresh Dance Company has toured extensively across the U.S as well as performing in Turkey and Korea.  The company, however, has never performed in Ronen’s homeland of Israel– something Ronen has always wanted to do.

Established in 1999, The International Spring Festival, Rishon LeZion, is a landmark in the culture and art scene in Israel.  The Festival is supported by the Foreign Ministry, Tourism Ministry, Culture and Education Ministry and public institutions headed by the Municipality of Rishon LeZion, international institution, embassies and diplomatic delegations in Israel, and private foundations and commercial firms. The goal of the festival is, “to bridge cultures and artists, showing the art and peaceful face of the country.”  During the 2009 ten day festival, artists will perform in the “North Theatre” in Kiryat Haim, catering to the Haifa region public, in Tel Aviv and in the relatively new art centers in cities of Herzlyia, Petach Tikwa, Modi’in, Beer-Shevam in the south and in the capital, Jerusalem.

Regardless of political unrest, the arts continue to flourish and bring together different cultures.  Koresh Dance Company’s performances in Israel was a momentous occasion for citizens of the United States and Israel.
