Dancing Through the Synapse
The Shmib Dance Company will be exploring the structure of the brain and role of the mind in being human through dance movement in the innovative show Dancing Through the Synapse taking place on March 29, 2009 at 3:00pm at The Meetinghouse Theatre at The CEC.
The nude body, props, and the movement of the human body will be used to inspire thought provoking questions, which can be expressed in a question and answer session following the performance. A combination of partnering, solo, and group work will convey the experience of human interaction. The show will shed light on the biological processes of the mind and their connection to the definition of being.
While seeking to educate, Dancing Through the Synapse is also meant to demonstrate how dance can be used as a highly effective medium to express the abstract.
Shmib Dance is a dance company rooted currently at Goucher College, which is soon to be relocating into the greater Baltimore area and beyond. Dancing Through the Synapse will be Shmib’s premiere performance. Melissa Talleda, artistic director of the company, uses the art form of dance to tackle daring subject matter. Talleda states “we are trying to convey the human aspects of the brain and the integral connection the brain has not just to everyday life, but to who you are…through dance, we can express human existence perhaps better than any other art form because of its ability to relate the abstract through human form and movement.” The performance is part of a four city tour for the company.
This performance by Shmib is composed of 18 dancers, a choreographer, and a guest choreographer. The company’s performances were made possible through funding from the Goucher College Student Government Association.
