Philadelphia to host the 2009 World Irish Dancing Championships

An Coimisiún le Rincí Gaelacha (The Irish Dancing Commission) announced that Philadelphia will be host to the 2009 World Irish Dancing Championships.

This is the first time these championships will be held in the USA and Philadelphia.

The Kimmel Center and The Marriott Hotel venues have been selected for the competitions. Over 5,000 competitors are expected to participate in the event. Dancers from Ireland, Great Britain, Europe, USA, Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand will be in attendance.

Dancers will compete in yearly age-grouped solo competitions from ages under 11 up to senior level over 21 years. The program of events will also include Ceili and Figure Dance competitions as well as Dance Drama. Separate competitions are organized for male and female competitors in solo events. Team competitions have sections for mixed and unmixed teams.

2009 World Irish Dancing Championships will run from April 5th – April 12th 2009.
