Imaginative dance program for Exeter School District sixth-graders is definitely not square

VideoStretch tall like a tree, drop low like a rock and twist like a pretzel.
Kick, melt, spin. Again.
The dancers go faster and faster to the music until parents and children alike are grinning and struggling to keep up.
Now the parents at Monday night’s dance class at Exeter School District’s Reiffton School knew what dance instructor Ann Marie Mulgrew has been teaching their sixth-graders for the past few months.
Mulgrew, who leads an experimental modern dance company in Philadelphia, has added modern movement exercises to the students’ gym classes and spent more time with a smaller group of students. The core group of 31 sixth-graders will end the dance project in a few weeks with a performance they choreographed themselves.
“We’re looking at it almost like a work of art and how it relates to dance, like lines, form, shapes, posture,” Mulgrew said.
