A six-class series with choreographer and teacher Molly Shanahan.
My classes tend toward complex and spiralic movement that asks for a quality of ease and fluidity. My long-term research has a somatic focus—the release of unnecessary holding, constraining, or binding of the muscles, often semi-consciously engaged to uphold social aesthetics communicating gender, beauty, class, strength, attention, readiness, or success. For me that meant releasing my habits of maintaining abdominal corseting, which resulted in both a more expansive vocabulary and a nearly-complete reduction in lower back pain. The process also put me in touch with the ongoing vulnerability involved in opting out of an ingrained value around bodily control and aesthetics. I am in a process of reconciling, healing, and acknowledging where conventions of ‘technique’ serve and support, and where they inhibit expression of what I hope are more compassionate aesthetics of body-in-motion waiting to be enacted. I bring these questions to my body, movement, and teaching; they show up as gyre-like phrases that give us a context for exploration, tenderness, play, and temporary community.
