The Dancer’s Artist Showcase
July 20 @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm$22
Ujima Dance Theatre is proud to present The Dancer’s Artist Showcase. A dance concert where Ujima will showcase the choreography of dance company members and emerging artists which include Aliya Anderson, Daniella Brown, Nia Imani Simmons, and Micheala Clovis.
The show will kick off with dance company member Micheala Clovis presenting her Modern and Tap dance number “Colibri” which is based on the Colibri Hummingbird specie and will consist of four dancers.
According to Micheala Clovis “Hummingbirds are one of the many important pollinators in our ecosystem. They are quick, methodical, flying jewels. When spotted in nature, it can be a magical experience. These creatures seems like they are straight from a fairy tale. Their manner is angelic and reminds one to appreciate the beauty of the moment and that happiness comes from within.”
Dance company member Nia Simmons will present her dance piece “Revive”: A work exploring new beginnings after experiencing a loss. For her “Whether a loss is physical or spiritual, healing is essential to begin again. The journey to feeling revived can be a slow process, but in it there are moments of grace and strength that pushes one to continue to never give up.”
Dance company member Daniella Brown will then present her dance piece “Blue Skies”. Blue Skies is a traditional jazz piece that represents the joyful emotions and movement expressions that are associated with being in love.
Company member Aliya Anderson will also present her piece which focuses on life for black women who have to deal with life after having spouses sent to prison “A lot has been written about mass incarceration of black men and how it plagues the black community. What is missing from the narrative, however, is the way that black women are left to pick up the pieces after loved ones are sent to prison. My pieces shed light on what life is like for these black women as they cope with the emotional and financial trauma of this social epidemic”
The director of the company Shana El will present her new work “Unity”, a modern jazz piece calling for people to come together with a group of four dancers. The company will perform some of its past works which include Women’s Voices, Ogun, and Southern Breeze.
Finally, guest choreographer J Bogan El will present a West African dance piece called Sinte. Originally a dance ages ago used to mark the transformation of maturity for young girls. Presently, the dance is done for rites of passage of young people and also done all year around for many occasions and full moon celebrations.
At the conclusion of the show, there will be the artist reception.
