Entanglement scaled e1634735428587

Latina, a dance film by MFA in Dance candidate, Amelia Martinez, will be streamed online November 19th 2021. This film is a collaboration with cinematographers Chen-Yi Wu, June Wang, and animator Chia Hsien Lin. A Q&A will follow after the performance.

Latina is a thesis project choreographed by Amelia Martinez, that reflects her perspective on what it is like being Latina. She and her dancers, Tatiana Lawson and Kimberly Caccia Ravan, dance with yarn, braiding their unique stories together to create their own tapestry of entangled experiences. The dance consists of mostly modern movement combined with fiber arts. Animations by Chia Hsien Lin bring a whimsical touch to the film with beautiful colors and imagery. Film collaborators, Chen-Yi Wu and June Wang, capture the weaving bodies and yarn with a soft authentic vison.

Amelia Martinez is a modern dance artist who choreographs with yarn to explore recurring themes of femininity, Latinidad, and community. Currently she is pursuing an MFA in Dance degree from Temple University. She graduated from Old Dominion University in 2014 with a BA in Dance Performance and a minor in Psychology. Notable choreographies are Unravel Me for the Choreographers of Virginia Showcase at the Museum of Contemporary Art, and Duality/Prayers of My People performed for Temple University’s Endings Showcase 2019.
