The King of the Ring was created by Christopher Dukes in 2003 as a crew battle competition where Bryant Lee’s crew, Philly Dance Kings (PDK), won top prize. The event took place a couple more times but was unable to continue strong. Bryant decided to revive the event in 2010 out of his love for dance and his desire to provide space in Philadelphia for street dancers to come together. King of the Ring currently holds competitions in 5-6 categories including: Poppin’, Lockin’, Breakin’, House, All-Style, and sometimes Crew Battles which are group competitions. There are prizes for winners and runners-up including cash, trophies, medals, free dance classes, free entry to another battle, and the like. However, the most important prize for the winner of each category is the respect of the street dance community.
The battles begin with people coming in the door to a hype dance party with a DJ providing the best music to set the mood. The space includes a dance floor, artists on the side vending items such as clothing, paintings, and other individually made crafts, as well as food and non-alcoholic drinks. While everyone is on the floor, the preliminaries begin with the judges watching those who have paid to compete identified by the numbers pinned to their clothes. Once the dancers have been chosen, they are paired up for Round 1 of the competition. In round 1, each pair must enter the dance circle and solo against each other for the opportunity to move to the next round. Those moving forward are paired again with the remaining competitors for the semi-finals where pairs compete until there are only two competitors remaining for the final round where one dancer is chosen as the ultimate dancer of that category.
