Tangle Movement Arts presents Timelines, a dynamic dance theater show from Philadelphia’s innovative aerial artists. Tangle’s nine-woman cast mixes traditional circus arts, like aerial acrobatics and tumbling, with dance, theater, and spoken word to present a highly kinetic meditation on female bodies in time.
From a wistful look at how our bodies change with age to an extravagant story of time travel into an unknown future, Timelines uses aerial dance and theater to explore our fantasies and fears of time, delivering Tangle’s characteristic “unexpected visual elements and fearless personal narrative” (Edge Philadelphia).
A dancer twists on the pendulum of a giant clock as it ticks down moments. An acrobat echoes life evolving on earth millennia ago, rising out of the ocean and into the air via body contortion and aerial rope. Two vaudevillians can’t quite resolve their comic timing on the trapeze. And a daydreaming secretary in a 1950s office escapes to a radical future in which people and relationships connect in profoundly different ways. Past, present, and future collide in an acrobatic drama of swinging trapezes and suspended fabric.
Tangle Movement Arts is a circus arts company with an interdisciplinary focus, whose work integrates traditional circus like trapeze and acrobatics with dance, theater, and live music to tell a multi-dimensional story. Tangle’s work reflects individuals of diverse identities, with an emphasis on queer and female experiences, and is devised collaboratively by its all-female ensemble.thINKingDaNCE says, “Tangle creates new worlds of relationships through their experimental work.” Tangle is based in Philadelphia and has been a Philly FringeArts Festival favorite since its inception in 2010.
