Volunteer Arielle Pina and Shari Williams Seek Black Women for Photo Installation
Seeking Black Women For Photo Installation:
Arielle Pina and Shari Williams seek black women for their photo installation that will appear in the lobby prior to their Philadelphia dance premiere of No Introduction. The piece is focused on colorism and beauty in the black community. If you are interested please contact Arielle Pina at firstname.lastname@example.org. Now scheduling shoots until July 25th!
About the Work:
No Introduction, specifically explores how Shari Williams and Arielle Pina identify with societal norms about beauty and value in the black community. This work was conceived based on encounters Pina and her sister, who has darker skin, have experienced concerning beauty and skin tone. In this work, the duo recognizes the context of being a “light skinned” black woman in opposition to that of being a “dark skinned” black woman. As two black women who differ in appearance and life perspective, they use this work as a point of entry to unearth their frustrations with the divide these comparisons incite.
Pina and Williams are collaborating with The Electric Ladies Series who will be facilitating a talk back discussion following the dance performance examining facets of colorism in the black community. Audiences will experience the dance performance and talkback as an hour long cumulative experience on August 19th at 7:00PM and August 20th at 6:00PM at Headlong Studios, 1170 S Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19146.
