The dance and music programs at Drexel’s Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design join in “A Celebration of Bach,” a concert devoted to the works of the master composer.

Musicians and dancers will combine forces during this performance to present a variety of Bach-inspired works. Drexel’s University Chorus, directed by Dr. Steven Powell, will present two choruses from Bach’s Magnificat to open the program. Dancer/choreographers Wendi Kornberg and Lauren Ciccarelli will present a group choreographed piece to keyboardist Brian Dilts’ performance of Bach’s English Suite Number Two.

Dr. Miriam Giguere, Dance Program Director at Drexel University, will present her work entitled “Borrowed Domains” in which a dance is created to text and then repeated to the music of J.S. Bach. Dr. Giguere borrows the choreographic structure from the late Ellen Forman, a Philadelphia dance pioneer for whom the Ellen Forman Dance Studio at Drexel University was named.

Dance faculty member Olive Prince will present a new work to sampled music by Bach. In addition, Senior Justine Pamiloza will perform a solo she has choreographed, inspired by the phrase “hope dies last.”

The program will conclude with a performance of Oliver Nelson’s 1973 concert work, Fugue and Bossa based on a Bach fugue. Nelson’s work is an orchestration of the first fugue from Bach’s Art of the Fugue, followed by a Bossa that uses the fugue theme as a countermelody. This premiere work, choreographed by Dr. Miriam Giguere, and danced by five student members of the Drexel Dance Ensemble will be performed to live music by the Drexel Student/Faculty Brass Quintet and the Drexel Concert Band, conducted by Dr. Myron Moss.
