BalletFleming’s Dancing in the Streets Debuts at Painted Bride
Sep 15th, 2012 | By Steven Weisz | Category: Archived ArticlesOn the “fringe” of the Fringe Festival, South Philly based professional dance company, BalletFleming, debuts a new and original work titled, Dancing in the Streets. The brainchild of BalletFleming’s Choreographer and Artistic Director, Christopher Fleming, the ballet is based on music from 1967,1968 and 1969.
Fleming grew up in New York City, and was exposed at an early age to rock music while living in the neighborhood known as Hell’s Kitchen. However, it was classical music and Broadway tunes that filled his young ears at home. His parents were in the theatre; his stepfather, an opera singer who had switched to Broadway; and his mother, a dancer who had done it all from classical ballets to variety television shows.
According to Fleming, “It was the teenagers and my sitters hanging out on their stoops, and in Central Park, playing 45’s on their record players or blasting their radios that introduced me and made me aware of the wonderful melodies, rhythms, and lyrics of rock music of the 60’s.” With the debut of Dancing in the Streets, all of the influences have come together.
BalletFleming is professional company of a dozen classically trained dancers located here in the heart of Philadelphia. The company was founded three years ago by former New York City Ballet danseur, Christopher Fleming. Mr. Fleming serves as the Artistic Director and Choreographer of the company. The dancers themselves are all classically trained and come from throughout the United States. Company members have danced professionally with such companies as Dayton Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Western Ballet Theatre of Puerto Rico, and Universal Ballet of S. Korea. They are graduates of such ballet schools as The Kirov Academy of Ballet (in D.C.), The Rock School, Miami City Ballet, The Royal Ballet School in London and School of American Ballet in NYC.
